Hi, I have a account here, and I set one up for my friend, and about to set up another one here.
I have been having an issue trying to figure out about domain names, who owns them?

The issue I think happened when I had the hosting company register the name, much like Hostmysite does if you order & pay for the year, as they offer a free domain name. However, when it comes time to switch your website someplace else, there seems to be an issue on who owns the name. I figure that if my friend paid for the name, does he not own the name, and can host it where he likes?

I told him about all the features here with HMS, and he is most interested in creating a store with the Miva, but if he can't use domain name that he wants, he says he will not do the whole website thing.

Thanks for any input on this,
John

When you register a domain name at HMS, YOU own the domain name. However, if you get the domain name free with a hosting account, and decide to cancel say within 30 days, they will only reimburse you the cost of the hosting plan less the domain name (so you end up paying for it if you cancel).

YOu will have no problem transfering in and out domains. Just keep in mind that when you transfer a domain, there is a $8.95 fee to transfer registrars. If you don't want to transfer registrars, then there is no fee.

Hi Jason,
sorry it took so long to get back to you, but been busy working on a site.
I am happy to hear that I will own the domain name when registering with HMS.

I have never had an issue like this before. I think that it is a trick with some hosting companies to get you to host with them. I have been trying to contact them for the last 4 days, but with no response. My friend is upset, as he paid for the name but can't use it,...

I am going to just set up another domain here at HMS for him, as I have been talking with the support staff here, and they have been most helpful.

Seems to me that HMS is the only professional hosting company that I have found!
Thanks
