Which router is best?

Hi, I am looking for a router for long range. I bought a D-link 802.11g but the range was too low for my house (50 ft+couple of walls).

Is the linksys WRT-54G powerful for long range?

I heard you can also mod the firmware to get higher power output. Will this work on the modern version of it?

Also, will rangebooster in the router work on a regular, different brand wifi card?

Cisco makes Linksys devices so that should tell you something right off the bat.

Linksys has a great user interface and is very easy to do what you want. Their firmware updates are very frequent and easy to update.

NetGear's interface is good for people who aren't familiar with networking.

As far as your question, I have a WRT-54G with antenna extensions and I can connect 3 houses down at the neighbors. Your wireless card will also make a difference on range.

I will NEVER buy belkin router again... Mine short-circuited and always caused the network to be down for an hour each day for three days because it took so long to reset and we thought the internet wasn't working so we kept retrying configurations. Finally we switched to linksys which got badmouthed earelier because of a bad motorola modem.

don't linsys routers have problems with p2p connections because of the low RAM?

I am going to run a tor server for ~5 people simultaneously, download+seed 10 torrents, serve ftp, http, ftps, https, all at the same time, 24/7. In addition I will play multiplayer games sometimes.

This server is going to be hooked up via ethernet, so will the problem still exist and how often would I have to reboot the router? Is a firmware upgrade going to help??

I got a cheapie D-Link wireless router from Verizon when they installed my FIOS. It does the basics, but overall it's junk. I intermittently lose wireless connections and my laptop will default to my neighbor's wide open wireless connection. I would go LinkSys or Netgear. Both are known for quality stuff, but don't cheap out too much.

I run a websever and have had as much as 15 connections at once with no connectivity issue with Linksys.
